This apple crumble is a real family favorite! It has a soft, sweet apple filling with a hint of cinnamon (optional) and a perfectly crunchy, yet hearty, crumble topping.

This is actually one of Chris’ recipes. Did I mention he’s also a cook? I am a happy girl.

To be Chili con carne is always on prescription rotation, we have to have it at least once every 2 weeks and I love the Sesame Shrimp Toast he also makes.

So on to his delicious apple crumble pie recipe.

What do we need?

For the crumble filling I like to use a combination of boiling (Bramley) apples and eating apples.

The cooking apples will break down more during the cooking process and the eating apples will retain a little more texture, giving the crumble the perfect applesauce center.

What is the crumb topping made of?

To get the perfectly crunchy apple crumble topping you want to use:

  • Cold, unsalted butter
  • 2 different types of sugar – caster for regular sweetness and crunchiness, and soft brown sugar for that light caramel flavor
  • Oats for extra texture (this is optional, you can omit them if you don’t have one in your cupboard)
  • Plain flour (all-purpose)
  • a pinch of salt

PRO TIP While peeling and chopping, squeeze a little lemon juice over the apples to prevent the apples from browning.

You can replace half of the apples with rhubarb, pear, or blackberries for another option. This is a pretty forgiving recipe and you can mix the filling with any fruit you have in it.

🍽️ What do you serve it with?

I like to serve it with my apple crumble homemade custard and vanilla ice cream. That way, the family can decide what they want to do, custard, ice cream, or both (does anyone do both? Sometimes it’s just too hard to decide!).
